Accomplishments of Heartland Plant Innovations

Since 2011, Heartland Plant Innovations (HPI) has produced approximately 150,000 doubled haploid wheat lines for public and private wheat breeders to meet their research goals in United States, Canada, Argentina, China and Germany. During this time, we have initiated and advanced innovative techniques to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of this production system (pollination method). Our small company continues to innovate and evolve to meet the needs of our customers.

Other significant accomplishments include:

1. Created a commercial doubled haploid process for triticale using isolated microspore culture. We serve multiple clients in the United States.
2. Successfully developed a multi-virus-resistant wheat using pathogen derived highly conserved nucleic acid sequences and the invention titled “Pathogen Derived Broad Spectrum Durable Control of Virus Diseases in Wheat” is patented by HPI.
3. Produced wheat lines by pyramiding wheat streak mosaic (WSM) virus resistant genes. These new wheat lines included WSM1, WSM2 and WSM3 genes.
4. Successfully received federal funding to organize and host industry-wide organic wheat conference. The proceedings of the conference were summarized in a white paper entitled “Opportunity is Knocking: A White Paper on Establishing an Organic Winter Wheat Breeding Pipeline in the Great Plains.”
5. Obtained state funding to screen wheat germplasm and mutant lines for herbicide tolerance in wheat and work is in progress (ongoing).
6. Secured ~$1 million from a private industry partner to enhance the flavor and nutrition of wheat (ongoing).
7. Developing a “Robust Doubled Haploid Breeding System for Sorghum.” Secured approximately ~$1 million from federal and state funding entities to support this work.
