HPI applies advanced technology for gene discovery, trait validation and crop improvements to deliver new products and production platforms that target unique, high-value market opportunities in an integrated fashion.

Doubled Haploid Production

HPI's doubled haploid production is helping wheat breeders across Kansas and around the world to develop genetically pure, improved wheat lines in as little as one year – that's up to five years faster than possible with conventional breeding methods.

Trait Development

Advanced genetic design of wheat and sorghum provides a unique opportunity to combine plant design platforms, cutting edge research and market analysis to develop novel traits.

Contract Research

HPI has a staff of experienced, educated people who are qualified to perform contract research for your organization.  We have access to the resources in the Kansas Wheat Innovaion Center and Kansas State University to take on the project that your staff does not have time to complete.  Make us an extension of your staff.  Call Rob or Asif to disucss what we can do for you.

Wide Crossing

HPI's wide crossing services are being used by breeders to introgress traits from ancient wheat and wild wheat relatives housed in the Wheat Genetics Resource Center into their program's material.  HPI performs this work on per-completed-line basis where you only pay when we deliver seeds. 

Wheat Quality Resource Center

The Wheat Quality Resource Center is a program designed to rapidly identify markers for end product quality. Scientists in the WQRC work confidentially with companies to identify molecular markers for quality using the companies’ own proprietary quality tests. These proprietary markers give the organizations a way to directly inform breeders with targets to improve wheat quality.


With the addition of the Wheat Quality Resource Center, Heartland Plant Innovations can now offer turnkey variety development from rapid trait identification through parent crossing and double haploid production.


Science and Policy

Phytosulfokine alpha improves microspore embryogenesis in wheat and triticale. Plant Cell Tissue and Organ Culture.

Abstract: Isolated microspore culture (IMC) has been used to develop doubled haploid lines and to generate homozygous lines in a single generation for varietal development. Phytosulfokine has been previously used in promoting cell growth and embryo development in various systems.
